The Steam DonkeysThe Steam Donkeys
- Everchanging -

The Steam Donkeys (Buck Quigley-guitar/vocals, John Brady-drums/vocals, Dan DeLano-keyboards/vocals, Dave Kimball-guitar/vocals, Joe Mancuso-harmonica and John Weber-bass/vocals) have released a new album titled Everchanging an eleven song collection of the finest Americana and roots music. One of the longest continually performing bands in our area, twenty five plus years and still going strong, the band is led by Quigley arguably one of the finest songwriters to come from these parts ever. Yes a bold statement I'll stand behind. Lots of great music on the album including the title cut "Everchanging" with its high lonesome guitar from Kimball, "I Didn't Think I Loved You", "Lucky Guy", "I Feel Haggard", and the boundless optimism of the Roy Orbison like "You Can Dream". Other tracks of note include "If You Lose An Angel", the rocking "Do What You Do" and "Pennyless" a tribute to longtime friend of the band Thelma Lee Ballard AKA Bad Penney who passed away in 2016. Two hidden bonus tracks round out the disc. The album was recorded at Mark Studios over a two day session on November 8 & 9, 2017 with Garrett Robinson handling mixing, engineering and recording duties and Mark P. Kisker Executive Producing. Rob FalgianoRob Falgiano
- Little Vision -

Rob Falgiano has released his sixth album titled Little Vision a fourteen song collection that shows his keen knack for writing instantly memorable melodies and songs. His ever evolving style and musical curiosity picks up influences as far ranging as Bossa Nova, rock, pop and country, jazz, funk and more blended for his own musical gumbo. Falgiano produced the disc with Mike Rorick and as always brings the best collaborators to flesh out his vision. Among the artists assisting are Ray Hangen, Jonathon Hughes, Mark Krurnowski, Joe Rozler, Jess Chizuk, Eric Starr, Mike Criscione, Savannah King, Grace Lougen, Joelle Labert, Ellen Pieroni and others. Highlights include "When I See You", the sweet acoustic number "Keep Shining", "Nothing's Over", "Momma Wore Hot Pants" and the jazzy moan of "I Can't Believe We're Not Together". Falgiano adds the deliciously funky "Super Sexy Santa" to the Christmas songbook and sings of women woes on "Naomi", "Goodbye Jane" and the rave up "Jeannette". Stand out track for this reviewer is "Bring The Love" a droning jam featuring a killer solo from Criscione. For more information about Rob Falgiano including live shows and how to purchase his latest release Little Vision check out

French Quarter HoundsFrench Quarter Hounds
- Dirty Work -

Music is Art 2016 Battle of the Bands winner French Quarter Hounds have released a five song EP titled Dirty Work. Known for their knock out live performances the disc is a nice sample of their live repertoire. The esteemed Marc Hunt mix the EP while Grammy nominated Anthony Casuccio mastered the disc. The band (Ryan Stoll (trombone/vocals), Matt White (tenor sax), Jacob Aguglia (trumpet), Kyle Michaels (drums), Nate Kalnitz (bass) and Mike Bunny (guitar) plays a funky horn driven sound that always gets the crowd moving their feet. The standard "St. James Infirmary" made famous notably by Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong kicks off the party, Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" gets a workout, the title cut "Dirty Work" and Eddie Harris' "Cold Duck Time" get served up before the closer a rollicking "When The Saints Go Marching In". Currently on hiatus due to education commitments you can still get more information by going to or

Willie MayWillie May
- Haunted House -

One of the most productive musicians in our area Willie May has released his eighteenth album titled Haunted House a ten song disc featuring May's unique blues style. The rollicking "Hey Big Fannie" gets help from Grammy nominated blues harp master Mark Hummel, the title cut "Haunted House" is a horn driven rumba while "Damn That Gubmit" resonates with anyone who has ever asked for a block of free government cheese. 10,000 Maniacs' Mary Ramsey adds viola to May's acoustic strumming on "Underneath The Trees", May brings the twang on the piece of honky tonk heaven "Gypsy Eyes", the Cajun spice on "Another Moon Song" and switches gears for the synth driven dance grooves of "Do Maiuke". Check out for more information on Willie May

Mavis StaplesMavis Staples
- If All I Was Was Black -

Soul legend Mavis Staples collaborates for a third time with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy for her latest album If All I Was Was Black a powerful album of timely and reflective music. Tweedy who plays on and produced the album also wrote seven of the ten tracks and co wrote the other three with Staples. Tweedy's son Spencer and Wilco band mate Glenn Kotche help out with a host of other musicians including Rick Holstrom, Jeff Turmes, Stephen Hodges, Donny Gerrard, Vicki Randle, Kelly Hogan, Akenya Seymour and Scott Ligon.. The album features some of Tweedy's best songs in ages all suited lyrically and musically for Staples with flourishes of Gospel, soul, blues and hymnals. "Who Told You That", "Peaceful Dream", "No Time For Crying", the title track "If All I Was Was Black" and "We Go High" along with a duet with Tweedy on "Ain't No Doubt About It" are all outstanding. For more information on Mavis Staples and her latest album go to

Casey JamesCasey James
- Strip It Down -

The best artists to emerge from American Idol were usually not the winners. Such is the case with Casey James. I remember seeing James on Idol (Yes, I used to watch A.I. before it became irrelevant) and saying this guy is good. His new album Strip It Down proves my initial thoughts again. No longer beholden to TV producers and record executive whims to push product without any musical integrity James has crafted his musical vision of blues, roots and country. Recorded in just five days with Grammy winning and Buffalo born Tom Hambridge on producer duties James shows he has serious chops on both the guitar and as a songwriter. Helping James out in the studio are Tommy McDonald (bass), Ron McNelley and Pat Buchanan (guitars), Kevin McKendree (keyboards), Wendy Moten (background vocals) and Hambridge (drums) along with special guests Delbert McClinton, Bonnie Bishop and the Muscle Shoals Horns. Highlights among the fourteen tracks include the kick ass "All I Need", "Bulletproof" a duet with McClinton, the soulful and funky "Hard Times, Heartaches & Scars", the slow blues of "Need Your Love So Bad", the old style barrel house saloon rocker "Makin' Up", the swampy groove of "Fight You For The Blues" and "Stupid Crazy" a duet with Bonnie Bishop. Check out for more information about Casey James and his album Strip It Down

Ronnie Earl &The BroadcastersRonnie Earl &The Broadcasters
- The Luckiest Man -

The latest from Ronnie Earl &The Broadcasters titled The Luckiest Man is a tribute to the band's beloved bass player Jim Mouradian who suddenly passed away following a gig. The title is from a quote that Mouradian, a well respected luthier, family man and all around good guy to all, often said "I'm the luckiest man you know-and I don't even know who you know". Earl leads The Broadcasters (Dave Limina-piano/Hammond B3, Diane Blue-vocals, Forrest Padgett-drums and Paul Kochanski-bass) through twelve tracks mixing originals and covers as all good blues album do. Guests include ex-Broadcasters Sugar Ray Norica, Anthony Geraci, Monster Mike Welch, Neil Gouvin and Michael "Mudcat" Ward. Earl is one of the most emotive and distinct guitar players on the circuit and shines on the self penned ""Southside Stomp" and "Sweet Miss Vee", "Blues for Magic Sam" and "Howlin' Blues". Two outstanding moments are on the Rev. Gary Davis' Death Don't Have No Mercy" and "Jim's Song" Ear's tribute to Mouradian. "You Don't Know What Love Is" a Fenton Robinson penned track and Don D. Robey's "Ain't That Loving You" features the exceptional and seductive vocals of Diane Blue. Two epic ten minute blues jams "So Many Roads" and "Long Lost Conversation" stand out as well. The Last Shade of Blue Before BlackThe Last Shade of Blue Before Black
- Steve Cropper Lou Mari and The Original Blues Brothers Band -

Forty years down the road and still going strong are The Blues Brothers Band featuring Steve Cropper and Lou Marini and their latest release The Last Shade of Blue Before Black. Also lending a hand on some of the tracks are Blues Brother Band members Tom "Bones" Malone, Matt "Guitar" Murphy and Joe Morton along with original band leader Paul Shaffer. Special guest appearances from Dr. John, Eddie Floyd and Joe Louis Walker add flavor to the proceedings. The album was recorded live in the studio with very few overdubs needed and most tracks needing only one or two takes. The album is a mix of new originals and blues standards that pay homage to the band's roots. Keeper's among the originals include "21st Century Blues", "Blues In My Feet" and the title cut "The Last Shade of Blue Before Black" while among the blues standards are James Brown's "Sex Machine", Willie Dixon's "Don't Go No Further", Delbert McClinton's "Cherry Street" and the Jimmy Reed classic "Baby, What You Want Me To Do". The Milligan Vaughan ProjectThe Milligan Vaughan Project
- MVP -

Acclaimed Austin, TX singer Malford Milligan and guitar slinger Tyrone Vaughan (son of Jimmie and nephew of Stevie Ray) have teamed up to form the Milligan Vaughan Project and have released their debut album titled MVP. The album was recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin with David Grissom producing. Guests include keyboardist Michael Ramos along with Jorge Castillo and Grissom on guitars. Lots of good stuff spread out over nine tracks including "Little Bit Of Heaven", the Grissom/Davey Knowles penned "Here I Am", a gorgeous acoustic cover of Rev. James Cleveland's "Two Wings" and a truly soul satisfying "Soul Satisfaction". They also do Buddy Guy proud on his classic "Leave My Girl Alone" and blister the paint on the walls with the Vaughan/Dan Dyer written "Devil's Breath". Two live bonus tracks round out the disc a cover of the Freddie King signature tune "Palace of The King" and another Grissom chestnut "What Passes For Love'. Check out for more information about the Milligan Vaughan Project

Kim WilsonKim Wilson
- Blues and Boogie Vol. 1 -

Legendary singer and harmonica ace Kim Wilson has released a new album titled Blues and Boogie Vol. 1 a sixteen song collection of originals and classic blues songs that harkens back to Wilson's Chicago blues roots. A founding member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds Wilson has always possessed an unmistakable harp sound and great vocal chops all on ample display here. Wilson penned songs such as "Bonus Boogie" the opening instrumental vamp that gets things started, "Searched All Over", "Edgier" and "Learn To Treat Me Right" feel right at home next to Walter Jacob's "Teenage Beat", Maceo Merriweather's "Worried Life Blues", John Lee Hooker's "Same All Blues' and Sonny Boy Williamson's "Ninety- Nine". Wilson also gets low down and blue on Jimmy Reed's "You Upset My Mind" and Elmore James "Sho Nuff I Do". Some of the musicians helping Wilson on Blues and Boogie Vol. 1 include Big Jon Atkinson, Billy Flynn, Barrelhouse Chuck, Richard Innes, Nathan James, Marty Dodson, Larry Taylor and Malachi Johnson. Kevin BreitKevin Breit
- Johnny Goldtooth and
The Chevy Casanovas -

Guitarist extraordinaire Kevin Breit is an in demand session ace that has recorded with the likes of Norah Jones, Rosanne Cash, k.d. lang, Cassandra Wilson and more. He has won numerous Juno awards, Maple Blues Awards and has played on ten Grammy winning albums. For his latest solo album he steps into the spotlight as his eccentric alter ego Johnny Goldtooth and The Chevy Casanovas an instrumental guitar driven album with great riffs and a familiarity that screams of good times. Nothing fancy or ground breaking here but something for everyone from surf rock, blues, twangy swagger, late night film noir mystery melodies to fat Link Wray sounding guitar chords. The album is a do it yourself project with Breit handling almost all instruments from guitar, melodica, upright bass, organ, vibraphone and percussion while Michael Ward-Bergeman adds accordion, Russell Boswell some bass, Gary Diggins on trumpet, David DiRenzo slaps the skins and Vincent Henry on sax and flute. Lots of good stuff among the eleven tracks including "The Knee High Fizzle", "Chevy Casanova", "Cozy With Rosy", "Zing Zong Song", "Crime Holler" and "The Goldtooth Shuffle". Pick up a copy of Kevin Breit's Johnny Goldtooth and The Chevy Casanovas for your next party by going to

Bay Area slide guitarist Dennis Johnson has released a new album titled Rhythmland. Recorded with his band The Mississippi Ramblers (Tim Mertz-drums, Jonathan Stoyanoff-bass and Craig Long-keys/backing vocals) the ten tracks on the album delve into the Americana roots and blues style with a dollop of rock and folk. Lots of keepers here including a nice reworking of the blues classic "Walkin' Blues", the jaunty "Fillmore Street", "Faith", the romping pace of "High Heels Shoes", the ballad "That Way No More" and this reviewer's favorite "My Love Is Here For You". For more information about Dennis Johnson and his new album Rhythmland visit

Peter ParcekPeter Parcek
- Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven -

Parcek has toured the world over with Pinetop Perkins and Hubert Sumlin to name a few and has opened for the likes of the Grateful Dead, Sheryl Crow, Susan Tedeschi, Charlie Musselwhite and more. For Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven Parcek commenced to Nashville and asked longtime Willie Nelson harmonica ace Mickey Raphael, guitarist Luther Dickinson and legendary Muscle Shoals keyboardist Spooner Oldham to help out. Check out the low down moaning dark blues groove of "World Keep On Turning", the title cut "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven", "Every Drop Of Rain", the blazing instrumental "Pat Hare" and a couple of nice covers of Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" and Jennie May Clayton's "Aunt Caroline Dyer Blues". For more information about Peter Parcek please visit

Al BasileAl Basile
- Quiet Money -

Al Basile's career began over forty years ago when he joined Rhode Island jump blues band Roomful of Blues as their first trumpet player. While Basile left that outfit many years ago he has continued to record and tour regularly. On his latest release titled Quiet Money, Basile recruits a few of his old Roomful alum to help out in the studio. Rich Lataille and Doug James on tenor and baritone sax respectively along with RFOB founder Duke Robillard on guitar keep things swinging. Robillard also produced and lends his rhythm section of Mark Teixeira on drums and Brad Hallen on bass to the sessions while Bruce Bears on piano and Jeff "Doc" Chanonhouse on trumpet round out the musicians. Basile has a lot on his mind including the current state of the blues "Blues Got Blues"; he ponders how the rich keep getting richer on the title cut "Quiet Money" and thinks about mortality on "Not Today" and the outstanding "Who's Gonna Close My Eyes?". Basile also knows how to just have fun on the tracks "Do You Even Know?", "Wrong To Be Right", "Simple Ain't Easy" and the sly double entendre "Put Some Salt On It". For more information on Al Basile and his latest album Quiet Money go to

Peter WardPeter Ward
- Blues On My Shoulders -

Peter Ward longtime New England area guitar ace and touring guitarist for Muddy Water's Legendary Blues Band has stepped forward with his first solo album titled Blues On My Shoulders a thirteen song collection. Some of the musicians helping out in the studio include former Roomful of Blues guitarist Ronnie Earl, harp player Sugar Ray Norcia, Anthony Geraci on piano, Sax Gordon Beadle on sax, Monster Mike Welch on guitar and Ward's own brother Mudcat Ward slapping the upright bass. Outstanding cuts include "She Took It All", the title track "Blues On My Shoulders", "Collaborate" with Sugar Ray handling vocal duties, "It's On Me" and a jazzy cover of the Jim Johnson chestnut "Kansas City Blues". A poignant moment comes in the form of the instrumental "Shiprock" Ward's ode to his late wife renown Boston blues DJ Mai Cramer who passed away from breast cancer in 2002. One other note about Ward, he spent a considerable amount of time playing with legendary Rochester guitarist Joe Beard in the late 70's in that city's clubs. For more information about Peter Ward and his album Blues On My Shoulders check out

Gurf MorlixGurf Morlix
- The Soul & The Heal -

With his velvety sandpaper vocals, sardonic wit and stellar word play, Gurf Morlix delivers another fine addition to his recorded legacy with his latest release The Soul & The Heal. Recorded at his own Rootball Studios in Austin, Morlix is helped here by the always steady Rick Richards on drums, Ray Bonneville on Harmonica, and Nick Connelly on the Hammond B3 while Gurf adds guitar, bass, keys, percussion and vocals along with producer duties. As reflected in the title Morlix touches on matters of the heart, relationships and the way people and things change in life. "Deeper Down" kicks things off followed by "Love Remains Unbroken" an ode to the virtues of love. "Bad Things", "Cold Here Too", "Move Someone" and "I'm Bruised, I'm Bleeding" are all intoxicating to the ears. "My Chainsaw" and its swiney guitar solo appears to be a metaphor for a life changing event as Morlix declares "I ain't talking 'bout wood". The album closes with the acoustic ballad "The Best We Can" and a fine ending to the disc. For more information on Gurf Morlix and how to purchase The Soul & The Heal visit

Positively Bob-Willie Nile Sings Bob DylanWillie Nile
- Positively Bob - Willie Nile Sings Bob Dylan

On his latest album Buffalo's own Willie Nile gives a heartfelt tribute to one of his biggest influences with a ten track tribute titled Positively Bob-Willie Nile Sings Bob Dylan. Helping out Willie on the album are Matt Hogan and Johnny Pisano from his regular touring band, James Maddock (check out his solo work-awesome), Andy Burton, Aaron Comess, Leslie Mendelson and Frankie Lee. The artists along with Nile brings the energy of his live shows to the songs for a modern updating in some cases other follow their original arrangement . Highlights include "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall", "I Want You", "Love Minus Zero/No Limit", "Every Grain Of Sand" and "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere". The album closes with "Abandoned Love" a rare Dylan track recorded in 1975 but left unreleased until the 1985 Biograph box set. Dylan only performed the song only once live in 1975 and never again. Nile brings new light to this should have been Dylan classic. Check out and for more information on how to purchase Positively Bob-Willie Nile Sings Bob Dylan and for upcoming Willie Nile tour dates.

Paige CoraPaige Cora
- Instant In Time -

Paige Cora, former vocalist for The Ruby Spirit, has released a new four song EP titled Instant In Time recorded at Black Rock Studios in The Sportsmen's Tavern musical complex. Cora recorded the album with some of Buffalo's finest musicians including Kent Weber on bass, Rob Lynch on drums, Frank Grizanti on guitar and Joe Rozler on keyboards. Jae Daniels recorded and mixed the album and beautifully captured the magic being made in the studio. The highlight is Cora's angelic and ethereal sounding voice. All four tracks shine with "Echoes" being my personal favorite. Its mellow jazzy vibe is mesmerizing and warrants repeated listening. "Forest Pine", the title track "Instant In Time" and "The Good Side Of Desire" round out the disc. For more information about Paige Cora and her new release Instant In Time check out

The album kicks off with the mellow instrumental "Elijah" written for Parker's son. The album closes with "Elijah (Reprise)" a nice bookend to close out the album. Check out for information on how to purchase Outside Ourselves or to find out where Freightrain are appearing.

D.L. DuncanD.L. Duncan
- self titled -

Buffalo born and now Nashville based D.L. Duncan has released a new self titled album featuring his sandpaper smooth vocals, great fret chops and exquisite songwriting. Duncan has made a name for himself in Nashville with his songwriting and playing and he brings in a host of his friends to help out here. Among them are guitarist Sonny Landreth, the legendary Delbert McClinton on harmonica, David Hood on bass, Vince Santoro on the kit, Kevin McKendree on piano and B3 organ, The McCrary Sisters adding sweet background vocals, Guthrie Trapp on guitar and mandolin, Lynn Williams on percussion and David Pinkston on pedal steel. Highlights include "I Ain't The Sharpest Marble" a nice shuffle blues featuring Duncan's self depreciating lyrical wit, "You Just Don't Never Know" featuring McClinton's scorching harp playing and The McCrary Sisters adding a churchy touch on background vocals and "Your Own Best Friend" where Landreth adds some stinging slide guitar. "I Know A Good Thing" which Duncan wrote with Curtis Salgado, the somewhat autobiographical "Orange Beach Blues" and the slow blues burner "St. Valentine's Day Blues" that shows off some tasty picking from Duncan all shine as well. The album closes with "All I Have To Offer You Is Love" a tender heart on your sleeve love song. For more on D.L. Duncan visit or
