Moms across the country are preparing for the only festival created to celebrate Moms Who Rock! The festival started seven years ago with ten bands on one night in Manhattan. Mamapalooza is now celebrating its 7th anniversary with over 300 acts in 20 cities worldwide. Brought to Buffalo by its local coordinator Annette Daniels Taylor, this will be Buffalo’s 3rd year. The artists participating include Annette Daniels Taylor, Noa Bursie, Kilissa Cissoko, Wise Mecca, Daughters of Creative Sound, Barbara Levy Daniels, Jennifer Elinge, Folkloric Productions, The Beat Chicks, Linda M., Belly Dance with Faaria, Vonnetta T. Rhodes, Verniece Turner, and Lilliangina Quinones. Mamapalooza is a comprehensive professional group of musicians, performers, artists, comics, writers and athletes with a proven track record of sold out shows and critical acclaim. Mamapalooza aspires to empower women through performance and merchandising opportunities.

Just Buffalo is proud to present Mamapalooza: Moms Rock More Than Just The Cradle! as part of its ongoing Interdisciplinary Performance Series, Where Words And Music Meet, with special sponsorship support from The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, The Buffalo News Gusto, and Down In My Soul Productions. In addition, this performance is made possible by audience support & public funds from The New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), and the New York State Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.

The artists taking part in this year’s Mamapalooza range from mothers of one to grandmothers to performance troupes with astounding numbers of mothers and children. The event is spearheaded locally by Annette Daniels Taylor, a mother of four, who states, “We came to Buffalo for a better quality of life and snow? It made me tougher!” To Rodney Taylor, her husband, she notes, “I want to say Thank You to him and the kids for putting up with me during Pre-Mamapalooza!” Her own mom Cora Lee, grandmothers Cilla Mae & Eunice and great grandmother Reatha, along with her own kids have been her biggest inspirations.

Noa Bursie, a mother of one, is Buffalo born and bred, the youngest of nine, and is fond of recalling stories her mother told about her grandfather traveling through the South in the 1930’s & 40’s playing and living the blues. Kilissa Cissoko, another mother of one, explains, "When my son was three I started writing again! When he was five I got myself back out there performing. Now that he's seven—band rehearsals in the living room are a regular part of life. Maybe I don’t vacuum so often—but we have the joy of music!" Cissoko started out as an indie artist with her acoustic/original duo The Jazzabels —which was notably the opening band for Ani DiFranco's FIRST tape release party! In the 90's the duo produced three indie releases and toured the USA and abroad, including: Kerrville Folk Festival (Texas), NxNE (Toronto), The Bitter End (NYC), CBGB Lounge (NYC), Club Passim (Boston), The Old Town School of Folk Music (Chicago), Skippers (Tampa)...and more.

After a hiatus for motherhood Cissoko has happily returned to writing and performing as a solo artist. In 2006 she formed a back-up band (aka Bloodthirsty Vegans) and quickly racked up regional shows in her hometown Buffalo at the Mamapalooza Festival, the Elmwood Festival of the Arts and Nietzsche's Nightclub. This fall she is giving monthly performances at Madame Mocha's Espresso Pub (solo) and Dance Alive! (full band). She's currently working on a new CD. Wise Mecca, mother of one, is a talented lyricist with the ability to perform over any musical genre. Although she describes herself as a chameleon this does not dispute her originality through her style and lyrics. Speaking from real experience, emotions erupt from her every word enticing the listener to understand her pain, joy and essence of life. Fellow musician Stan Draper states “…weaving between stunning personal honesty and social commentary. This says volumes of her voice, which can only speak for itself…beautiful sound, and (she) definitely knows how to play word games… she can hang with the roughest of rappers, but can also sing like they can’t.” For more information, go to www.myspace.com/wisemecca.

Daughters of Creative Sound, Karima Amin, Grace Turner, Sharon Holley, Fu’labi Miller, Denise Chapman, Yvonne Harris, Sandra Bush and Gail Crawford, are the self-proclaimed “spirit-led” mothers of 21children all together! Daughters of Creative Sound is “nine women of African descent expressing ourselves through vocal, visual, and percussive avenues. The DAUGHTERS' objective is the healing of the female mind, body, and spirit through the arts. Our performances speak to Spirit and speak through Spirit via instrumental and vocal music, storytelling, and movement that touch the soul. Although women and girls seem to be most inspired by the work of DAUGHTERS, all people who witness the group’s presence and energy are moved by the women’s ability to entertain, inspire, uplift, and educate,” according to their website, www.myspace.com/daughtersofcreativesound. Barbara Levy Daniels, a mother of one, was signed with ABC Paramount Company in New York City in 1959 at age 13 and wowed Ray Charles, who told Paramount to sign her immediately. The release of her first CD, “They’re Writing Songs of Love…” celebrated her return to professional performance in 1998. She has been back in full swing ever since! Jennifer Elinge says of her involvement in both motherhood and writing: “I am a full-time working mother of two children: an eight-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter. In between soccer and laundry, I try to find time to write poetry.”
Folkloric Productions Dance Co. is a not-for-profit cultural organization that has been providing artistic services to the WNY area for over ten years, including ongoing classes for children & adults, community outreach programs, and school programs. The Beatchicks are all about humor with rhythm, and describe their work by explaining, “Our songs reflect the funny side of the she-human condition. We’ve been performing together for over two years, debuting at Mamapalooza 2006!” Together they have one child and a grandchild due just in time for this year’s Mamapalooza celebrations.

Linda M.’s journey has taken her from international performer to award winning songwriter over the last 7 years. She has licensed her music to the hit TV show Dawson’s Creek, performed side stage for Lyle Lovett at the Molson Amphitheater and is currently signed to LA’s Jay Warner, for Music Publishing. Belly Dance with Faaria is led by a mother to three; Faaria is a Belly Dance Performer and Teacher in the Buffalo and WNY area. She performs for large and small events. Vonetta T. Rhodes, another mother of one, credits her “Mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and many other facets of womanhood…” for contributing to her creative output, and proposes she is “a vessel and vehicle of poetry to tell stories, raise consciousness, empower spirits, and touch lives.”

Verneice Turner, mother of one, is a troubadour who believes it is for her to share her thoughts on the power to empower (bless) others and herself, through the art of poetry. She has recorded a CD titled “Poetry in Black and White” with poet Cliff Bernier and performs from time to time with bassist Odell Northington. Her motto,“The Divine purpose that Life is meant to be enjoyed and empowering,” certainly speaks to the mission of Mamapalooza.

Lilliangina Quinones is skillfully juggling motherhood, marriage, healing, teaching, theater, and music while finishing a Ph.D. Lilliangina is a holistic healer, Spanish teacher, theater/music teaching artist, dancer, singer, actress, and musician as well as a wife, mother, daughter, sister and praise leader for her church, Elim Baptist, and is a mother of three.

WÜNDERLAND: It was just supposed to be a one-off reunion, but is now the resumption of the band! Formed in 1990, Mach IV of Wünderland features Ric Stave on Bass/Keyboards, Michael McGuire on Vocals, Dan Vanderzyden on Drums and Garrett Lechowski on Guitar. You couldn’t go out on a weekend night in 1992-1993 without finding these guys playing somewhere in Buffalo. Their credentials include performing in the 1992 Buffalo version of THE WHO’S TOMMY at the Pfeiffer Theatre. Additionally, the band/members have racked up a total of TEN Buffalo Music Awards over the years, including Michael McGuire in the Best Male Rock Vocalist Category (1997) and 7 TOP ROCK BAND awards. Performing a tribute to the era of PINK FLOYD, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Queen & Genesis, here's your chance to see one of only a handful of shows Wunderland will play this year. ROMANIAN ORPHANAGE BENEFIT CONCERT COMING TO LOCKPORT MARCH 29th

Lockport, N.Y. (March 17, 2008) – Yme? Ministry of Middleport is hosting "Building the House of Hope," a fundraising event for the House of Hope Romanian orphanage on Saturday, March 29th, at 7pm at the Historic Palace Theatre, 2 East Avenue, in downtown Lockport. The benefit concert will feature 17-year-old folk-pop singer Phoebe Henry (www.phoebehenry.com). With a style compared to Ani DiFranco and Michelle Branch, she has performed across the U.S., opening for artists like Chubby Checker and Paul McCartney. The night will also feature a special performance by Brooke Yaiser, a teenager from Middleport who has been to the House of Hope Romanian orphanage where she saw first hand the needs they have in a country where it's not uncommon for parents to abandon their kids because they cannot afford to raise them.

"Living With The Past" will be performing in a very special 40th anniversary Tull tribute show on June 28th at 8PM. Joining the boys for this one night-only performance will be the great legendary, Grammy award-winning bassist, Dave Pegg of Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention fame, along with special guest, international recording artist, PJ Wright. The show, to be held at Club Infinity, Williamsville, NY, will be opened by Dave Pegg and PJ Wright performing a set of their amazing songs from Galileo’s Apology, followed by Living with the Past, joined by Dave, doing a set of Tull classics, with a few special surprises in store.

Living With The Past, featuring frontman and flautist Ray Roehner (Somewhere In The Universe – Universe Records), John Berg and Erin Ward on lead guitars, Kevin Kukoda on keyboards, Chris Martin on bass, and John Olivier on drums, has gotten worldwide attention. The band concentrates on the music of Tull’s golden era, performing songs from the Aqualung, Benefit, and Thick as a Brick, among others.

A Look Back

Man, the Western New York weather reared it's ugly head this weekend ! It got kicked off to great start, though. The Lakeside Blues Band started the weekend off right on Friday, despite the terrible weather conditions to a PACKED house at the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center (1201 Pine Avenue Niagara Falls, NY 14301 716-282-7530) for the Art Of Beer. The areas BEST microbrews were in attendance with some awesome food vendors as well.With Norman Bock unable to perform (music) that night, Tom Keefer slid over from guitar to bass. Mike Tilton played harmonica (we will see more of this in the future). We were joined about half way through the blistering set by NACC resident, Jason Boudreau on guitar. People came from as far away as Burlington, Ontario Canada to see the Lakeside Blues Band even with the snow storm.We also saw DeeDee and Nancy (Secic) get up on stage and join the band on Feelin' Alright.What a great night and the Band looks forward to the next Art Of Beer. You won't want to miss it.Saturday March 8th Tom Keefer was to be a featured performer with the Odyssey Blues Band at The Lion Tavern ( 15 Lock Street Port Dalhousie, ON) at 3:30 PM. Lakeside Blues Duo Upcoming Gigs

This Wednesday March 12th members of the Lochside Celtic Band will be performing for a private event at DeGraff in North Tonawanda. Sunday March 16th stop by Arrowhead Springs Vineyard (4746 Townline Road Lockport, NY 716-434-8030) at 2:00 PM and see the Lochside Celtic Duo ; Mike Tilton and Tom Keefer as they play Celtic music at this new winery. Tom and Mike played in The Distance with Dave Ross, brother of the winery's founder Duncan Ross. Dave and Duncan went to Wilson High School with Tom. Duncan ('79), Tom ('80) and Dave ('81). At press time we did not know if it is open to the public or for TNBPA members only. It may be a members only event.

A Look Back

It was yet another action-packed weekend as Friday February 29th the Lochside Celtic Band kicked it into full gear at the Buffalo Irish Center ( 716 825-9535 Get Directions 245 Abbott Road, Buffalo, NY 14231).Drummer John Lynch was unable to attend, so keyboard/banjo player Stan Tryninewski filled in on drums.It was a great night and our friends The Leftovers were there. Unfortunately, we could not coax them up on stage to do a song. We'd like to thank The Morgans also as they made it out that night.As soon as we know, we'll let you know about our return date there.Saturday March 1st the Lakeside Blues Duo was back home at the Wilson House (300 Lake St. Wilson, NY 14172 716-751-9888).It was another fun filled night as all of the regulars were out. Bass player Norman Bock made it out with various other luminaries.Yet another extended evening ! On Sunday March 2nd the Lochside Celtic Duo (Mike Tilton & Tom Keefer) were at the John J Walsh American Legion Post #381 (923 Niagara Ave, Niagara Falls NY 14305) for the Benefit for Womans and Childrens Hospital. The crowd said that was some of the best acoustic music they had ever heard. It was a great time for a great cause. ALSO, that day Stan Tryninewski played keyboards with Joe Folmar at the Olcott Methodist Church for the Polar Bear Swim. Stan performed before he jumped into the Lake at 2:00 PM ! Now let's take a look at what's ahead.
