The Gift at the Pearl to Honor Fallen Buffalo Firefighters

All-day, five-floor concert to benefit the future of the children of Jonathan Croom

When Buffalo firefighters Jonathan Croom and Lieutenant Charles “Chip” McCarthy made the ultimate sacrifice in an East Side fire last August, they both left behind children with full lives ahead of them – in the case of Croom, whose second child was born after his death, children who will never know their father.

In response to the personal and financial void Croom’s children now face, his friends have rallied the Buffalo music community to gather for The Gift at the Pearl, an all-day event set for Sunday, April 11th, across all five floors of Pearl Street Grill & Brewery. The event will feature more than a dozen local bands on four stages, along with a host of raffles and auctions, with 100% of the proceeds going to a trust fund for Croom’s children.

“This gift will show Jon’s kids how much he meant to his friends, and how much this community appreciates the sacrifice he and Lt. McCarthy made for us,” said Jason Hall, owner of Sessions Studio in Black Rock, who graduated with Croom from the Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts. “Jon’s kids have a hard road ahead of them, but it was easy to line up support in their honor.”

Hall has assembled some of Buffalo’s best performers, including Abraxas; Dee Adams; John Lombardo & Mary Ramsey; Myron & the Id; Alison Pipitone Band; Gretchen Schulz & Doug Morgano; Maria Sebastian; Skiffle Minstrels; The Stone Bridge Band; the Stone Country Band; That 80’s Hair Band; Tuco; Alan Whitney; and Mark Winsick – all of whom are donating their time and talents for the cause.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door, and are available now through Eventbrite at http://jonathancroom.eventbrite.com or by contacting Sessions Studio at 716-447-1508 or sessionsvideo@gmail.com.

Guitar Shorty, aka David Kearney, was born in Houston, Texas but raised in Kissimee, Florida. As a young boy he would sneak into his uncle’s room and try to play his guitar. He was so small his hands didn’t fit around it’s neck, so he would lean it against the wall and play it like a stand up bass.

When other kids were in high school, Shorty was a student by day and a working musician by night. One evening when he went to work the marquis read, “The Walter Johnson Band featuring Guitar Shorty"; the name he would go by from then on was born.

Right out of high school at the age of 16 Shorty joined Ray Charles and his band for a year. At the age of 17 he recorded a single under the direction of Willie Dixon on the Cobra label. When Shorty was lured away to play with Guitar Slim he moved to New Orleans.

In New Orleans, Shorty fronted his own group that became the house band at the legendary Dew Drop Inn. There he played with greats such as T Bone Walker, Big Joe Turner and Little Richard. It took a job with Sam Cooke to get 19 year old Shorty on the bus and on his way to the West Coast.

Shorty lived and worked in both Los Angeles and Canada until in 1961 he met his wife, Marcia, in Seattle. When Shorty married Marcia he also got Jimi Hendrix, Marcia’s brother for a brother-in-law. The young Jimi Hendrix came to see Shorty play often and they were friends until Jimi’s untimely death

Like a Texas tumbleweed, Shorty rolled back to the Los Angeles area in 1971 and Los Angeles has remained his home. He cut his first full album and got his first W.C. Handy Award while living there.

Since that time Shorty has recorded several albums for the Black Top label and is currently signed to Evidence Records. He often jams at local clubs with former members of the Eagles, Steely Dan, and calls local blues artist Keb Mo a personal friend and fan. He continues to capture audiences with his sincerity, energy, and Rocking/Blues style.

Sportsmens at the Pearl Concert Series Celebrates New Partnership

Local musicians invite favorite non-profits to share the spotlight

A new partnership between two Buffalo institutions is paying early dividends for the local music community, while opening doors for their friends in the non-profit sector.

Kicking off this Sunday, March 7th, the free Sunday concert series “Sportsmens at the Pearl” celebrates the joining of forces between venerable Black Rock music venue the Sportsmens Tavern and downtown destination Pearl Street Grill & Brewery, which includes a major expansion at the Sportsmens and an increased focus on live music at Pearl Street. Each Sunday - barring occasions and holidays such as the NCAA Tournament and Easter - favorite artists from the Sportsmens will play at the Pearl from 4-7pm, while sharing the spotlight with a local non-profit organization of their choice.

Each week, the chosen non-profit will have staff on-hand promoting their programs and running raffles to raise funds. This Sunday’s opener features one of the “you call the classic, we play it” house bands at the Sportsmens, the aptly named Sport Men, who will support their Black Rock neighbors at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Sport Men singer and “Human Jukebox” John Culliton Mahoney returns solo the following week to revel in the spirit of “Post-St. Patty’s Parades at the Pearl,” benefiting the Belfast Summer Relief Program. After breaking during the madness of the NCAA Tournament in Buffalo, the series resumes March 28th with the stirring Gretchen Schulz & the Morvells in support of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame. Following two special Sundays in April, the heart-on-rolled-up-sleeve rock of the Alison Pipitone Band and Grammy-nominated polka of Jerry Darlak & the Touch will complete the inaugural run.

“This partnership creates more gigs for the Buffalo music community,” said Sportsmens Tavern owner and Sport Men bassist Dwane Hall. “We have first-class musicians in Buffalo that deserve more opportunities like this, and allowing them to support a local non-profit of their choice makes this gig mean even more to them.”

The complete lineup for the inaugural run of Sportsmens at the Pearl is as follows –

March 7th – the Sport Men, supporting Habitat for Humanity ReStore

March 14th – John Culliton Mahoney, supporting Belfast Summer Relief Program (part of Post-St. Patty’s Parades at the Pearl)

March 21st – no concert: NCAA Tourney

March 28th – Gretchen Schulz & the Morvells, supporting Buffalo Music Hall of Fame

April 4th – no concert: Easter

April 11th – Special Event - “The Gift at the Pearl” – 14 bands across all five floors benefiting the children of fallen Buffalo firefighter Jonathan Croom; tickets and more at http://jonathancroom.eventbrite.com/

April 18th – Alison Pipitone Band, supporting SPCA

April 25th – Jerry Darlak & the Touch, supporting TBA
